Essential Findings for Production Teams
Selecting the appropriate patch backing is just as important as choosing the front material. The backing dictates how the patch attaches, how long it remains secured through laundering, and whether it can be interchanged on demand.
1. Sew-On Backing (Plain / No Adhesive) The traditional standard for maximum longevity. A thin protective plastic or non-woven fabric coating is applied to the rear of the patch to lock threads in place without adding heavy stiffness.
- **Attachment Method:** Stitched directly onto garments using a sewing machine or needle & thread.
- **Durability:** Permanent (lasts the full lifetime of the garment).
- **Best For:** Heavy workwear jackets, denim vests, leather motorcycle apparel, and fire department uniforms.
2. Heat-Seal (Iron-On) Backing Equipped with a thermal polyamide glue film on the back that melts under heat and pressure, bonding firmly to garment fabric fibers.
Recommended Ironing Parameters: * **Heat Press Temp:** 160°C to 175°C (320°F to 350°F). * **Pressing Pressure:** Medium to Heavy pressure. * **Pressing Time:** 15 to 20 seconds from the front, then 10 seconds from the reverse side. * **Best For:** Cotton T-shirts, hoodies, team jerseys, totes, and spirit wear.
3. Hook & Loop (Velcro) Backing Consists of two components: the rigid **Hook side** (sewn directly to the back of the patch) and the soft **Loop side** (sewn onto the garment or plate carrier).
- **Durability:** Reusable for 5,000+ attachment cycles.
- **Best For:** Military uniforms, tactical caps, police outer carriers, flight suits, and morale patch collectors.
4. Peel & Stick Self-Adhesive Backing Uses a pressure-sensitive high-tack adhesive film protected by a removable paper backing.
- **Durability:** Temporary / Short-term (lasts 1 to 5 days).
- **Best For:** Trade show giveaways, convention badges, party favors, and photo shoots where permanent sewing is not desired.
Technical Specification Matrix
Use this baseline calibration chart to adjust machine tension, pull compensation, and needle geometry when decorating commercial substrates.
| Substrate | Recommended Density | Pull Comp | Underlay Recipe | Needle / Tool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pique Cotton PoloRequires medium cutaway backing (2.5oz) to eliminate fabric flagging. | 0.40mm – 0.44mm | 0.30mm (7-8%) | Center Walk + Full Tatami Mesh | 75/11 Ballpoint (SES) |
| Structured Twill CapCenter-out digitizing sequence required to prevent center seam bunching. | 0.36mm – 0.40mm | 0.40mm (10%) | Edge Walk + Zig-Zag | 80/12 Sharp (RG) |
| Fleece / Sherpa JacketWater-soluble topping (Solvy) is mandatory to prevent stitches sinking into pile. | 0.38mm – 0.42mm | 0.35mm | Full Tatami Grid (Crosshatch) | 75/11 Ballpoint + Solvy |
| Heavy Denim / CanvasHigh needle deflection risk; slow machine down to 650–700 RPM on dense fills. | 0.38mm – 0.40mm | 0.20mm (5%) | Edge Walk + Light Grid | 90/14 Sharp (Jeans) |
| Performance PolyesterUse no-show mesh backing (poly-mesh) to prevent stiff rings around logos. | 0.42mm – 0.46mm | 0.35mm (9%) | Double Center Walk | 65/9 or 70/10 Ballpoint |
